As soon as Private Practice came
on, all i could think was, "I really hope this is connected to Grey's
Anatomy somehow!" Grey's Anatomy was such a popular show and
watching it made that understandable. The drama, the action, everything is life and
death! How exciting! But of course, that is the strategy the network does on
purpose. It is called gap filling and it is when you leave a gap after an
intense moment on the screen to reflect upon the moment and draw conclusions.
Private Practice did this wonderfully. This strategy is my guess
as to why Grey's Anatomy was so good. It had everyone on the edge of his
or her seats. The manipulation of
the audience’s emotions in turn makes the audience feel more connected to the
show. Another really good example
of gap filling is from the 1967 TV episodes of Spiderman. Heres an episode http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMIt5J0rgLw.
