Since the times of when television first became invented in
the mid to late 1900’s, it has come to be a source of entertainment for almost
everyone. Because of that, it is no question that television networks try to
use this source of entertainment as a way of commercializing products or
services that will ultimately lead us into purchasing or seeking out for the
offered services. However, is it acceptable that they try to push this sort of
commercializing into children networks such as Nickelodeon or Disney? As a kid,
I used to be a big Nickelodeon and Disney channel fan. I used to love watching
shows such as the Rugrats, Cat Dog, Lizzie McGuire, and even Kim Possible.
During those shows, I’d see numerous commercials advertizing toys and those
toys would pertain to the average age group of the children watching whatever
show was on. It’s amazing to me that as young kids; they start us off with the
world of advertising and not only that, but as far as I can remember (going
back to our class discussion), they don’t leave kids wondering what will happen
in the next episode such as many shows on television today such as Private
Practice which we saw in class, Breaking Bad, or even reality shows such as
Keeping Up with the Kardashians. To me, the differentiation of how television
networks aim to the age group and select the type of advertising or services is
crucial in the moving forward and growing of the networks and products/services
as I think it was mentioned in class as well as further engaging them in various
aspects. Now, back to my question: Is it wrong? I don't think so. It's become a part of society and the way media works and continues to progress.
