Blog Post #1

BET is a channel I have rarely watched.  The majority of what I hear about BET is mostly things like “That’s trash!”  and “Who watches that stuff?”.  Due to these typical reactions of the people that surround me, I have never had any sort of drive to watch BET or any of the black cultural shows that were broadcast on BET prior to the company being taken over by a large conglomeration.  I always figured that I would not enjoy any of the programming because it was not aimed at a white middle class male and if I did watch the programs on BET I would immediately feel alienated by them.  I feel that the majority of white middle class, people like me, feel the same way about BET because after all the channel is called the Black Entertainment Television channel.  From what we discussed in class, BET was meant to televise black cultural television, not Tyler Perry’s horrible sitcoms.  Black cultural television has a purpose, Tyler Perry’s sitcoms do not.  I have caught myself watching a Tyler Perry show once and I was immediately turned off by the amount of characters that overplay their “blackness”, which caused me, as a member of the audience, to feel alienated.  But this might be the primary purpose for the BET network.  The network is primary meant to draw the African American audience, rather than the total population.
