Capitalism, Capitalism, Capitalism

Reading Butsch's article all I could think about is, "Yea, that's just the way it is.  These hollywood executives and producers need to support themselves and their families too so they need to reduce risks and hold onto advertisers so that they can keep their jobs."  This thought connected to the discussion we started to have in class on Monday in my group processing group about whether our economic system needs to work in this way.  In my group I said, "Of course it doesn't.  Things are always changing."  But after reading this article I'm thinking a little differently.
What the most people want will be made, because making TV shows cost a lot of money, and people working on the shows can't for free because they also have to make money in order to function in our capitalistic society.  Now that statement leads to the same images being produced on TV that we've been talking about all quarter and especially this week with class, like the under representation of the working class and the many examples of working class families.
After reading this article, I realize that the idea of "what sells the most will be made" is so ingrained in my brain, and I think in most American's brains, that our system will not dramatically change anytime soon.  Maybe not even ever.  We all just need to make money to survive, and people are more concerned about taking care of themselves than giving a fair representation of marginalized groups in the media.  I'm not saying I like that, that I think its right, but I just don't think its going to change very much anytime soon.

A class mate told me that this blog post was pessimistic.  I wanted to add that I think change happens very slowly, and there is hope.  But I do think some things will never change.  I think people will always want money, and unless there is a dramatic change to how our system works, money will always be king.
