After reading the assigned article this week, I really got the impression that our Capitalist society is going to reign supreme for the time being. It has just been this way for too long and making a drastic change could put us in a bigger hole than before.
Sure, the notion of capitalism may not depict and show the "best" content of media but it doesn't matter to those who are producing the content because they are receiving their check. Our society has been this way for what it seems like forever. The reality of this, people are just going to have to accept it or simply just not tune in. But either way the common pessimist chooses, again, the people are still making money. As long as the content being put out there is generating revenue it will not change regardless of how obscene it may be.
Again, if we as the viewer truly want to see a change in media there is really not much we can do. For instance, the hit MTV show Jersey Shore was being produced for the past few years and this was really showing some "shitty" people. People who see this on TV usually are in such a shock from it that they cannot stop watching. In the event, the viewers ratings drop for the particular show, that show will then be replaced by something maybe even more outrageous. The Wu-Tang Clan puts it the best, with their classic song "C.R.E.A.M: Cash Rules Everything Around Me." The message trying to be brought up in this song is that people obsess and only care about money. Thus, again, supporting the notion from Butsch's article.
