After reading the Cosby Show piece, one connection I made to the media we see today is through the show Modern Family. However, unlike the false portrayal of the Black Family that existed in the Cosby Show by portraying the Huxtable's life free of racism, discrimination and hate. We can see the same argument can be made about the portrayal of the gay couple in Modern Family. We can see how their life on tv is seen from the hardships and discrimination an open gay couple can have in public and does face in our society.
A major issue our society faces today both socially and politically is the acceptance of gay rights. Now more than ever Gay couples are fighting for equality in our society by the legalization of marriage and having the same protection and benefits as a heterosexual couple. Furthermore we can see how our generation is more accepting of gay's through by being open about discussing the ideas in our schools and medias. However, this contradicts the last generation where homosexuality was rarely talked about. Although we are becoming more tolerant and accepting, their is still a lot of discrimination against the gay community.
The gay couple in Modern Family leads a normal life of raising an adopted child, dealing with marital issues and family dramas, but what we don't see is the discrimination an open gay couple in our society faces. Their life seems perfect, and they rarely bring up the harder subjects that gay's face. Just like the Cosby's portraying the perfect black family, we can see the same resemblance in Modern Family.
