I
have always heard the word satire being thrown around but I never had a
clear definition of what it was. What exactly qualified as a satire
and what was funny just for the sake of being funny. After leaning what
it took for a media text to be satirical I took the time to
analyze some of my other favorite television shows and movies. With comedy
being one of my favorite forms entertainment I was able to look more closely at
certain shows and determine what can be considered to be a satire and what just
a pure slapstick comedy is. The show that focused the most on was South Park it
has been a show that has been always surrounded by controversy. It always
has a say on pop culture in the United States and comments on current
political situations. Although a majority of the content can be misconstrued as
being just a joke there are many commentaries on how we as Americans live our
lives and what much of society is doing. An example of this can be seen in the
episode referencing Honey Boo Boo and obesity in America.
South generally uses exaggeration to make situations funny but in this case
the joke is not far from what is actually happening. This is a satire that is
commentating what people are consuming in the media and what is happening to
American physically.
