For the last month I have been on a major King of the Hill
binge, so after weeks of watching the escapades of Hank Hill and company I realized
that the article “Ralph, Fred, Archie and Homer” by Butsch made a real good
point. The under-representation of the working class is evident in many shows.
However this is not the case in King of the hill the show does present the
working class however it still manages to show them in a fashion where they
seem to still be in middle class. The two characters that do flip this around
are Dale and Bill they are portrayed as dirty and oafish in order to paint the
working class as being undesirable. This keeps the audience from associating
with the working class. However when it comes to the main character of the show
Hank Hill he is depicted as an assistant manager at a small time propane
company. This is not a high paying position but he is shown as still having
wild adventures and a great amount of free time. I never realized that this
show depicting the white working class male was actually promoting the lifestyle
of the middle class. Needless to say watching more shows made me realize the
working class is never shown in a positive light. I personally take offense to
this because I grew up in a working class family and see no reason why it is
under-represented and shamed.
