Mismatched Pairs

After discussion in class and our viewing of King of Queens, I thought about the strange dynamics of TV couples. The wife is generally more attractive and more serious about her job or about pretty much everything, and the husband is goofy, not as attractive, and sometimes on the chubby side. Why does this happen so often? After a little more examination, the case seems to often be that the husband has money so the wife just jumps onboard. Obviously this isn't the case with King of Queens, but it certainly is with Jay and Gloria on Modern Family as well as Charlotte and Harry on Sex and the City.

While I don't know the answer to this question, I think I would like to further explore it for my extension paper. I think gender on TV in general is an interesting topic to explore. Even on a show like Modern Family that claims to be challenging the norm hasn't actually challenged the norm all that much. Yes, there is a gay couple with an adopted Asian child, but Cam and Mitch display many characteristics of the stereotypical marriage. Claire and Phil are everything we talked about in class, but Phil isn't as unattractive as some of the other examples. Jay and Gloria are a strange match, but he has money and she has...boobs.
