Stereotyping in the media

What stood out in Richard Dyer's reading was how people compare stereotyping to their lives when they see it in media.  After reading what Dyer had to say and what Louisa said in class I got thinking what came first?  Did someone do something in front of someone else that made other people start stereotyping that certain race or gender?  Or was it something that we saw on TV that made us start spreading that certain stereotype.  I am not sure if we will ever know but what I do know is that if you watch TV now you will see that reality TV shows go above and beyond showing stereotypes.  If they decide to show a house full of young adults they will get the dumbest blonde they can find, they will get the most dramatic homosexual and even the worst Asian driver.  People start to see that and they start believing even more into the stereotype even if it really isn't true.  Richard Dyer believed that stereotypes are a way for people to fit into a certain category and because of that stereotypes are bad.  I am not sure if I agree that they are bad, but I do agree that they are not always true.  I have seen a lot of brunettes do stupid things and dumb brunette's do not have a stereotype yet.  I think that everyone should be able to have a clean sheet.  If I was told that I was a stuck up jock because I played soccer I would say I wasn't but I know some people who are. I know that is hard to do but it is kind of like the saying don't judge a book by its cover. What it comes down to is that media portrays stereotypes because people enjoy putting other people into them and until we can stop categorizing people stereotypes will still exist.
