Sugarcoating life's harsh realities

Barbie, always painted to be a wonderful well-dressed and employed girl.  She's had many career in education, arts, medicine, public service, science and engineering  and many more. How did she get those? Did she go to MIT  and get a degree in engineering? No she didn't. Barbie gives children the idea that things are  easy to attain. It gives them the idea that they can achieve anything they want, but it fails to mention all the hard work one must go through to attain these things, and even then you may not get what you want. Barbie is sugarcoating life.
Barbie raises the issue of whether we should explain to children the harsh realities of life? Children are being raised believing that they can achieve anything they want. However, the reality is that this isn't true. Our economic status, educations, and our background in general determine our success in our endeavors. Sure, there are people who have made it past the limiting factors and have had success, but these cases are rare.  So should we raise children with this sort of ignorance? Is it healthy for them?
