The New Man in the Relationship.
This week I did a media anylysis on Hook's "We Real Cool." I looked at a short YouTube clip where a vlogger was suggesting that the woman in black relationships is now the man. This has gotten me thinking about the gender roles in today's society, and how they might not have switched completely, but have definitely changed. The historical examples that Hooks gave, describing the black man asserting power over the black woman through sex because of the racism and power that was taken away from him by the white man, still continue to affect role sex plays in modern relationships and the gender dynamic. But I also see big changes, and this doesn't just apply to black relationships. I think that the idea that a woman can be indepentant and can desire sex beyond procreation is one of the major developments that is starting to break the traditional setup. This indenpence that allows for single mothers puts the right to a child into the woman's hands and plays along with the idea that the woman is now the man since as Hook's describes, the man traditionally exerted his power through the amount of children he has. However, if it's now the woman's child and she can choose to raise it without the man, isn't it the woman who is in power? Again it's not that simple, but I do think that there are changes happening and the dynamic that Hook's puts for is changing.
