During the Dave Chappelle “The
Racial Draft” skit, I had a freaky flashback to a conversation I had with a
couple friends recently. We were
talking about a basketball player whom I had, until I got corrected, thought
was white. As my friends were
making fun of me for not knowing he was African American, a friend made the
comment of, “Nah, we’re keeping ‘basketball player,’ you guys can keep O.J.” He
was obviously teasing, but I believe, that while humorous and exaggerated, Dave
Chappelle was not to far off in this skit. The satire really brings about important points in a way
that doesn’t make people uncomfortable. By addressing topics such as these in a
satirical way, instead of making people uncomfortable, like if Jim Carey’s
character on In Living Color were real, it makes them easier to address and
makes people more aware of important issues.
