The Realistic Barbie

There has always been controversy when people decide to bring up the toy Barbie. Barbie has been around for a long time and because of her feature she has been the talk of many people who disagree with what she represents.  I read the article and I understand where Steinberg is coming from.  In the article she writes that Barbie is not realistic.  When I say that I mean that she displays whiteness to an extreme.  Barbie’s body is so unreal that if a normal person was to have that body she would fall over.  In the article though Steinberg writes that Barbie always has a job that she displays womanly careers in.  If she is in the army she is not holding a gun, she is the medic.  What Steinberg wants to know is why Barbie’s jobs are not more realistic.  In my article summary I write that the author is stressing that Barbie conveys certain stereotypes and characteristics that are not realistic.  The author wants the reader to see how Barbie, a doll that many young girls love and she even admitted she had them but they give out the wrong idea.  The author wants Barbie to be more realistic and have qualities and jobs that people are more common.  Barbie is an icon and with that comes expectations that people want to believe.  I never played with Barbie’s I know that my sisters did and they enjoyed it and they turned out to be wonderful girls and I know that a lot of young girls who play with Barbie’s turn out fine  but it is the ideas that we put in these young girls minds that Steinberg doesn’t like.  Barbie is a favorite among young girls and hopefully with the way that the world is today Barbie will become more realistic but until then hopefully young girls understand they can be whatever they want to be.
