The fact that someone like Kim Kardashian is famous has
always puzzled me. Even more puzzling is the fact that she has a reality show
that follows her life, as do many other celebrities, or even has-beens.
Personally, from the snippets I’ve seen of shows like Keeping up with the Kardashians, a lot of the events that are shown
are staged to make for interesting episodes and their lives generally aren’t
that interesting. One of the shows that I did watch for a while was Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels, which
follows Gene Simmons and his family and what they do on a seemingly everyday
basis. One of the things that I thought was interesting in looking at Gene
Simmons vs. Kim Kardashian is that Sophie, Gene’s daughter is constantly shown
in the show as trying to not be associated with her dad’s name. She’s seen as
starting her own organizations and doing things by herself. And not to say that
Kim Kardashian is playing off of her famous parental figures, but I think that
it’s easier to pay attention to someone if they have some sort of relationship
to a famous person.
To this point, I think the fame is ascribed, but the actual
people are celetoids that happen to have longer than 15 minutes of fame. The
reality shows are one of the big things that keep people interested in their
lives. Much like Gene Simmons, he has his reality show and quite honestly, I
don’t think a lot of people really think about KISS anymore. And while he did
achieve his celebrity status, he is using his reality show to keep that celebrity.
I truly think that reality shows that supposedly follow the everyday lives of
these people have created a new way for people to become celebrities, whether
they actually achieved it or budded off of something else.
