Faith or Worry in America's Future

The inaugural ceremony took place this past Monday. I'm starting to take more interest in these things now that I'm in college. I got the chance to listen to all of President Obama's second inaugural speech. The one thing that stood out the most to me was that he threw patriotic stuff at us rather than speaking as a leader.

Obama never promised the country anything, but rather said a lot of uplifting statements. Hard truths were not expressed. Obama knowledgeably linked himself with firm ideas and suggest certain impressions. The one statement he said that bothered me was "We are true to our creed when a little girl born into the bleakest poverty knows that she has the same chance to succeed as anybody else, because she is an American, she is free, and she is equal, not just in the eyes of God but also in our own. It is very hard for anyone to go from bottom to top in today's economy. He does have a good point that America should keep aspiring equality of opportunity. He made it seem that destitute poor enjoy that equality. Obama doesn't tell the story of poor people who don't make it to the top and haven't been given the same opportunities as those in a higher economic class.
