I was in the group this morning that spoke about the changes that are happening with BET, and to be honest, i didn't even know there were any changes. Although, as a young white female i'm not sure i'm their target audience. But wait! Am I? Since being purchased from Viacom the author argues that BET has taken on an MTV look, and MTV is targeted at me. So I decided to see if BET was something I felt targeted me.
Honestly? No.
But while watching the BET Awards tonight I did notice there were plenty of mainstream references, tons of things that I would see on any other awards show. I couldn't help but wonder if that meant the black community had saturated mainstream culture, or if that was their attempt to target me? Though there were commercials that I had never seen before (an all black Toyota commercial) there were also commercials I see all the time (an all white Hershey's Bliss Chocolate). After watching a solid 30 minuets of programming the jury's still out for me on whether or not they were trying to target someone like me.
