It's All a Show

Obama's speech as the freshly inaugurated 45th president of the United States was the backbone of the theme of the inauguration, "Faith in America's Future".  He is such a brilliant orator, I really must say that he got me believing in America and its people.  Obama made me want to work harder to contribute to this America that he seems to envision.  I haven't really thought much about his speech since Monday, but in the moment he really did light a fire inside of me.  Obama wasn't alone on that stage, he brought a diverse group including Richard Blanco, a gay poet from Maine, Sonia Sotomayor, the first hispanic chief justice, and of course the first family including both Obama girls.
I was very proud of my country to see so many different types of people up on the stage helping inaugurate the President.  But is seeing those people enough?  Sure a gay man is able to stand up and read a poem at the inauguration, but in most states he still can't get married.  Some may say that Blanco being able to read his poem in is a sigh of a step in the right direction, but perhaps a feminist reading might see it as more deception from the media.  The media makes it look as if this gay man is on the same level as all of these highly distinguished people, but in reality he doesn't have the same rights as they do.  If the GFN was broadcasting this I think there would be less glamour and entertainment involved in the inauguration and more focused on whats actually happening in our country.  This is a celebration, so its alright to have a few songs in there.  But come on, lets talk about something real.
