Progress in Equality

Unless I have misunderstood what exactly constitutes as a feminist issue, it seems like people are missing the bigger issue with the inauguration.  The United States just reelected an African American president fifty years after Martin Luther King Jr’s “I have a dream...” speech.  Fifty-eight years after Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, an African American woman watched her husband get sworn into office, making her the First Lady for four more years.
If the Global Feminist Network were to broadcast the inauguration, they might have done little different than what CNN.  They would have wanted to show how far this country has come with equality by having an African American president serve his second term as president and by reflecting on the attitudes toward minorities fifty years ago.  If the GFN had had a live twitter feed during the inauguration, I would think they would have been tweeting a bunch of pictures from the past.  For example, they could have posted a picture of the march on Washington or a sign over a water fountain expressing “white only.” Though, they might bring someone on as a commentator to talk about how we are not done yet.  There is still inequality in the world and a famous gay rights advocate would be a good person to comment during the news coverage.
