Psychoanalysis

People avoid dissonance at all costs. No one likes the uneasy feeling of conflict in any situation.  People are always trying to make sense of the world in order to escape these uncomfortable feelings.  I recently read a book explaining the history of the unconscious mind and I learned that most underestimate how powerful it is.  One could successfully argue that every action a person takes is due to the unconscious mind. It is amazing to make connections from the book to things I learned in class.  For example, gap filling seems to be blatantly the result of the unconscious mind and its motives.  When we see odd situations on television we try figuring out what is causing the situation or what will happen next that makes the situation acceptable.  The unconscious mind is likely to resolve the uneasiness by recalling past similar situations and filling in the gaps.  Rather than accepting dissonance, the unconscious mind finds a heuristic that fits nicely with the television show.  The people writing the shows often use gap filling to deceive the audience, and make them believe what they want them to believe about the show.
