Star studded affair: The Inauguration 2013
The Inauguration of the President has gotten out of hand lately with amount of focus on the crowd and the production value and less on the actual purpose of the event. At times it was comical how the only way to get anyone interested in the swearing in of a public official is to throw a few star studded names into the mix, like Beyonce. Although this inauguration was of great historical importance with it being the second term of the only African American President of the United States, I felt that the meaning of the event was diluted by the need for it to be entertaining. Watching it with a feminist point of view in mind did provide me with certain critiques that could be made to provide less of focus on wow factor and more on the substance of the inauguration itself. An example of this would be putting less of an emphasis on the crowd that was waving their American flags and replacing it at times by cutting to different locations where workers and different people with different types of backgrounds watching the event because of how important it can potentially be. The various topics of the speech given by President Obama pertain to these individuals especially. The focus was on the topics of a fair wage for all women, immigration, and gay marriage. These are issue that would be focused on through twitter streams because just having mentioned these issues means that progress has been made but nowhere near completed. Focusing on issues that affect people because of their gender is the type of coverage that should be focused on and not the stars that appear to sing the star spangled banner.
