Where was Pelosi?
The representation of women was a mixed bag leaning towards the better during the Inauguration. At the beginning the president was escorted in by the inaugural committee as well as John Boehner and Nacy Pelosi. I never saw Nacy Pelosi. While she was there I found it interesting that CNN chose not to show a camera shot of her. It just seemed strange. After that it seemed like representation was improving. Elizabeth Stanton was mentioned as one of the Founders and that was a nice mention. Then the statue of freedom on the top of the Capitol was talked about for quite a while and it was explicitly mentioned that the statue is a women. I did feel that by pointing out it was a women took away from the sincerity of the comments, but then again it just shows that there was a conscious effort to include women in talking about the history of America. The choice of Myrlie Evers was a great pick to speak. She was surely chosen because of her civil rights activism but the appearance of a powerful women speaker was a nice attrition to the speakers. The only other thing besides missing Pelosi that bugged me was the fact that Obama said that "All men are created equal." I know he was quoting the constitution but I feel like he could have taken some creative freedom and fit a "and women" in there pretty easily. All together though I think there was a fairly good inclusion of women in the inauguration and hopefully it will keep getting better as the years go on.
