A Facebook post on racism

This week’s topic regarding race and ethnicity has really sparked an interest in me since it is such a sensitive topic to talk about in today’s society. Coincidentally, as I was browsing through my Facebook News Feed about half an hour or so ago, I came across a post from President Obama’s page titled, “Conservatives Revel in Their Racism as They Mock First Lady Michelle Obama”. The article dealt with controversial racist remarks about Michelle Obama’s attempt to provide students with healthier lunches and such. As an example, Alabama football coach referred to her as a “big fat gorilla” claiming that her apparent 185-190 lb weight meant she was “overweight”. Reading through the article, it seems as though her physical appearance is the cause of such hateful remarks that make it seem like racism is never coming to an end. Will that ever be possible, though? I don’t think so. Racism has been so embedded into our society and sometimes even taken under the hand of extremists, that it will be difficult to surpass it even if we tried. The ideology some people have will continue to be and won’t allow for the prejudice remarks and actions to subside. The article mentions how “white supremacy” that occurred since the beginning of time is the cause of people’s racist beliefs in this country.  The article also mentions  how white supremacy was the “unequivocal governing ideology, and despite the struggle for civil rights for all Americans and the election of the first African American President in 2008, anti-African American racism is still prevalent in the population and within the conservative movement” and unfortunately, I’d have to agree with that. I feel like it’s an unfortunate fact.
