From Barbie to Biggie
I definitely believe that Barbie does contribute to a negative feeling that women have towards their own bodies. These dolls provide an impossible image of what is beautiful. The same goes for the toys that young boys play with they are muscle bound behemoths that no average kid could ever hope to match. These toys help solidify a structure that people are stuck in no matter who they are. The image of what we a beautiful person should look like is heavily influenced by the toys we play with and other outside sources. Even in music such as rap masculinity is set to be a false persona that young boys and men are fooled into believing. However these toys and music are not to be blamed as the source of this acculturation but merely tools used by the culture that accepts these norms. The biggest point we can make as a culture is not to blame these media outlets but rather reflect on why we accept these norms as being whole truths. In the case of rap why do we accept the image of masculinity in these videos and songs as being correct why are we not telling young boys that these stigmas are no longer acceptable. As for young girls and women there should be a point to be made that there is no such thing as a single perfect image all women are beautiful in their own way.
