Good Morning America:Barbie Edition

Barbie is a doll that almost every American girl gets when they are little. What many little girls love about Barbie are the different outfits she can change into and suddenly become a completely different person. Each outfit goes with a different occasion. One minute, Barbie can be an Olympic swimmer and the next a nurse. Now, what Barbie and Mattel fail to explain is how Barbie is so successful in becoming all those careers, how she attained a pink convertible or how she has a huge house. That is not the only thing that Barbie fails to explain. The Barbie reading reminded me of an article that I read online a couple years ago. It depicts a model that is marked up as if she was going to get plastic surgery. Barbie is contorting this idea of how girls should look. The article talks about a woman who has had several surgeries in order to look like Barbie. It is scientifically proven that one cannot look like Barbie even with all the plastic surgery that is out there. The article states everything that the model, who is already skinny, had to fix in order to look like Barbie. For instance, the model would have to get a brow lift, a jaw line shave, rhinoplasty, a cheek and neck reduction, a chin implant, scooped-out shoulders, a breast lift, liposuction on her arms, and tummy tuck, which would also have to be sculpted as if it were lined in whale-bone from the inside. This is just half of what she would have to do. The 55 year old woman that did go through all  these surgeries to attain the Barbie look told Good Morning America, a popular talk show, that she is suppose to "look like this." Many girls are aspiring to be doll like because Barbie represents this ideology of an unattainable body that many girls think they should have. In our current society, a person's physical image and appearance has dictated young girls lives. Many suffering from eating disorders as well other physical problems. It’s interesting that something like a doll can influence people to do harmful things. I've attached the online article.
