Nicki Hating

I found the conversation last class about Nicki Minaj really interesting. I myself am quite the fan of Nicki. I'm not really a long term fan who is familiar with here early work; I'm just a fan of her current work. The work that everyone seemed to be hating on. The discussion was talking about how she is a sell out and a has modeled herself into a Barbie figure. There is merit in saying that her earlier music was deeper and probably more meaningful. But I don't know if I really think it was better. Sure the media companies that own the studios and radio can push music, but people still have a say in what they want to listen to and they choose big pop stars like Nicki. I see that she has changed and that she is all about the money and fame. But when she sings about getting all the muny and pesos, she isn't really hiding it. So if she is being totally upfront about her new motives and style, why is they anything to hate for? Yes, there is a certain level of expectations that we should expect form the media. There are societal norms that the media disseminates, but at a certain point when do we decide that maybe the media is just giving us what we like? There may definitely be something wrong with the way Nicki Minaj has changed but can we really blame the music industry for making her change or ourselves for wanting what we condemn?
