I want a tv family?

Have you noticed lately how, dare i say, disgusting tv families have become over the years? Now i'm not saying all tv families are like this, but most of them certainly are. In shows like King of Queens the wife is thin and attractive and the husband is generally an idiot or overweight. Or both. Why are people portraying this as the real American family? The wives generally hate the husbands, or barely tolerate them. But the second they do something that is even slightly on point the wives fall in love all over again. I'm not buying it. When we watched King of Queens in class most of the research questions brought up were about how often the wife yells at the husband, or how often she is let down by his actions. This is such an unhealthy way to portray the American family. This just makes it ok for real American families to act like this. It is overdone, or is the the true makeup of our families today? Is minor happiness and general tolerance all I can look forward to later in life?
