After reading Rojeck's notes on a celebrity, it was applied to the show Keeping Up With The Kardashian's. The main character of the show was the widely known Kim Kardashian. Me being oblivious to mainstream news, I have only know her name and not how she gained fame. From the first episode, I learned that she gained some fame through a sex tape she made with Ray Jay. After learning who Ray Jay was, it occurred to me that this sex tape made Kim famous. There was also Kim's father who was the famous lawyer in the O.J. Simpson case. His money also helped lead her to fame because Kim used it to meet Paris Hilton. Paris also got Kim's name out in the open, giving her more fame.
So is Kim truly a celebrity? Rojeck gives different names for people like this; they are Celetoid and Celeactor. Celetoid is a person who achieves fame through a staged, media event. Celeactor is a character who becomes an institution fixture of popular culture. Using this to look at Kim's career, she is both a Celetoid and Celeactor. The Celetoid portion would be her sex tape with Ray Jay. The Celeactor would be that she has a lot of money and also has clothing lines and perfume out in her name. It seems that some people are using these aspects to gain fame, rather than make it for themselves.
