Keeping Up With the Gatekeepers

Ever since the days of the printing press the distribution of media has been confined to the hands of the few. Those who have had the power of distributing mass media have been successful because it makes viewers and fans craving a product they desire yet are unable to produce such media themselves. I rely on the New York Times to inform myself about foreign affairs, I watch Wes Anderson's movies annually because nothing no director can give me such satisfaction. And for 6 seasons I watched LOST religiously becuase... I JUST HAD TO KNOW WHAT THE HELL WAS HAPPENING!

As fans, we know what we want, and we know where to get it. The people who give us our entertainment give us an expectation, so if we comply to them, we have no reason to complain. The problem with having theses entertainment gatekeepers is that their products are limited profit. Action movies have more or less the same story line, just with different actors. New "real housewives" shows pop up all the time because people crave them, yet nothing but the aesthetics change. By keeping to these restrictions as fans we don't really see much of a change, just a stream of accepting what we see.
