What Do We Do Now?

Throughout this course, we have learned different ways in which to understand and see the media. My eyes have been opened to new concepts that as a viewer I had never realized. Now that I am aware of these underlying themes and messages I am noticing them more in the media. But what do I do now? Learning about cultural hegemony and white privilege make me discouraged about media and its influences. Being aware of the groups in power, how are we meant to counteract these messages. Will we ever be able to? According to the hegemonic concept, those in power will use that influence to keep their ideals as the dominant and most important in the media. Because of this "Catch 22" cycle, how are we meant to stop hegemonic powers at hand from constantly influencing us. I wonder if discussing the concepts will help to change the current system in place.
