Analyzing media and looking for examples of hegemony, ideology, Marxism, gender, etc is something I believe allows us to become more media literate. Classes like these allows us to really look into media and see what type of things and messages it is trying to tell us. I believe that this course is important because we consume so many hours of media every single day and sometimes we don’t know what to think or take out of said media. We often just shrug it off and not pay attention to the message, because it’s just media and a form of entertainment. But really analyzing media is a way for us to see how our culture or the culture of others is represented, transformed, and/or manipulated on screen. I think it’s really important to have this skill of analyzing media because then we can understand the bigger picture about our own lives, culture, society, and more.
Something that I really took into consideration and with greater understand is seeing and intertwining the various concepts and terms from the readings and using them in all the media texts that we saw. I think it was good we got to focus on one terms or subject each week, but as the quarter went on I began to use and find examples of concepts we focused on in previous classes. And I think that was the ultimate goal in our class. And also we can use these terms not only in media, but in our own lives. What are some things that we do on a daily basis that contributes to our society. Do we assimilate to a culture, do we use our own privileges as a way to teach others about or allow someone who doesn’t have a certain privilege to have a voice, do we let stereotypes define us or do we rebel against them? These are the things that I take way from this course and will apply them to media and my own life.
