There are several shows where the fan base reaches across
generations, and others that are targeted to specific groups of people. One
example of a sitcom that speaks to a variety of age groups is Friends. Growing
up, I remember my parents watching the show religiously each week. Though I
didn’t understand all of the jokes at the time, I became familiar with it and
knew my parents enjoyed the show, so I learned to as well. Now that I am old
enough to understand the jokes, I enjoy the show even more.
Shows like Friends have carried over onto late-night cable
because they were not available (new or repeated) for a period of time in the
early 2000s on network channels. The sitcom essentially fell off the face of
the earth, and fans were left to watch reruns or reality TV. So what happened
to the sitcom and why did fans who loved Friends dearly not receive other
sitcoms to compensate? What transpired in our society that caused us to
transition away from sitcoms and what made them come back?
