A Structured Institution Inside Another

Many people believe that racism is an issue of the past because our society has evolved and learned from those horrific times. In reality, racism is more prevalent than ever. The only reason why we are blind to it is because people aren’t going out in the street and giving disgusting looks to people of other races or yelling out obscene statements as people once did. Racism has become an undercover issue that still needs a lot of work. As I was on Facebook today, I noticed that one of my friend’s posted something about the college he attends. He goes to Oberlin College in Ohio where in the last couple of days there have been posters placed all around the campus discriminating and stating very racist comments about the varying ethnic and cultural communities in the school. An organization that caters to students of varying ethnicities has been attacked by other students who dislike the opportunities that this organization is providing to students of distinct character and race.  I was appalled when I saw this because I thought college was an atmosphere of educated adults that knew right from wrong. Obviously, I was incorrect. I would be extremely angry if that happened on DePaul’s campus seeing since it is a diverse school. I cannot even imagine what those students who are being discriminated against are feeling. I’m sure they feel unsafe in a place most call home since most of the students that attend Oberlin College are not from Ohio. Racism is not something of the past if people our age of a “newer” generation are still acting upon such discriminatory acts. Racism is an institution that our country has been founded upon. It has been structured and implanted in our society and it will take time and effort to get rid of it. I have attached the link of the organization that has been under attack.
