I’m a huge Community fan and I was really unaware of the Inspector Spacetime fandom and how it came to be. I find this really incredible because we get a sense of how fans of a TV show or film or book can impact or influence a huge amount of people. This reminded me about Scrubs, a sitcom that took place in a fictional hospital, Sacred Heart, and followed the lives of a few characters. Now this show ran for 9 seasons and they had their series finale in season 8, but the fans loved it so much and demanded it to come back and so, the next fall, Scrubs was back on the air. Only when it came back there was a huge shift, there was an entire new cast except 2 of the main characters and the other main characters guest starred for a couple episodes. The location had also changed...it didn’t feel like the Scrubs everyone knew and loved. Due to these changes the fans lost interest and so Scrubs was cancelled in the 9th season. You’ll probably even hear Scrubs fans saying “I don’t count the 9th season, it was terrible.” I for one am one of those fans. Oof, that 9th season was awful.
Anywho, I believe that the Scrubs’ producers decided to risk making these huge changes to see if there was a potential spin-off, but at the same time I believe that the producers had no choice to change a huge amount of the show. The reason being because not only did they have a series finale in season 8, but many of the actors had said they wanted to move on to bigger things and that it was time for the show to end. Either way, wit that huge risk of changing so many elements of the show, we get to see the influence that fans can have on a TV show.
