You say celebrity, I say celebrity.
We had a discussion in class the other day about Kim Kardashian and if she is an ascribed or achieved celebrity. The argument for ascribed being the fame that her father and step-father already had and the argument for achieved celebrity being that she capitalized on her sex tape, she started her own store, and used her show to her success. In my opinion she is an achieved celebrity. Her father's fame and stepfather's fame are not really that big of a deal. Neither of them are the household names that Kim is. She has created her own fame. Both through her show and her antics for the paparazzi. When it comes down to it, she's a celebrity either way and she participates in the continuation of her fame by participating in the media. All the current celebrities in the world today have to continually maintain their media attention. It doesn't really matter how they got started, they all are doing something to stay prominent. So, at the end of the day all the pop culture celebrities are really the same.
