The Fresh Prince
In the article, “Enlightened Racism” by Jhally a couple of very clear ideas and cnocepts are presented, including social mobility, the american dream and the concept that cultural differences are what limit you from moving forward, which is basically throwing the blame on african americans for being impoverished.. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air a clear indication of social mobility, as you can see Will Smith’s character moves up in class or is changing his class. He starts off as a rebellious kid from West Philadelphia and ends up a responsible member of society, and a college student. The fresh prince also relates to the article by Jhally because The Fresh Prince of Bel Air is a more recent and relatable example than The Cosby Show to our generation, as in The Fresh Prince also demonstrates a upper, middle class black family with universally relatable situations. Lastly, this show relates to the definition of The American Dream as given in the article(a just world where anyone can make it and racial barriers no longer exist, since Phil Banks family is well off, but also expands slightly on the concept of cultural differences being what stops you from moving forward because as you can see Will moves forward to a college graduate and successful member of society from an unmotivated teen from Philadelphia when presented with the opportunity to better himself.
